Stylistics of Theistic Communication Through Cataphora in Qur’an: Meaning and Effect Ḍamīr Sya’n in Al-Mufassal Chapters

Abstract


This article examines the phenomenon of theistic communication in the Qur'an, focusing on how cataphora, particularly the use of ḍamīr sya'n (DS), functions in the Al-Mufassal chapters. The study finds 24 instances of DS in 11 surahs using a descriptive qualitative method with systematic stylistic content analysis at the syntactic level. These pronouns can be divided into three groups: detached, attached, and omitted. The study reveals that four main semantic functions are presented: glorification, emphasis, criticism and ridicule, and explanation. The results show that DS is not just a grammatical phenomenon; it is a deliberate rhetorical device that makes communication between believers stronger, makes the text more cohesive, and makes the Qur'anic message more emotionally and spiritually powerful. The results help us better understand how the Qur'an sends divine messages through complex language and style choices.
