Abstract

The Peurateup Aneuk tradition in Acehnese society embodies cultural and religious values related to tawhid, family education, and moral formation. Although previous studies have examined Peurateup Aneuk primarily from cultural, religious, and educational perspectives, limited attention has been given to its integration as local cultural material in Mahārah al-Qirāʾah (Arabic reading skills) instruction, particularly as a medium for internalizing tawhid values. This study examines the function of Peurateup Aneuk as a semiotic resource for tawhid internalization in Mahārah al-Qirāʾah instruction at a state Islamic university in Lhokseumawe. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with one lecturer and six students, and analysis of Peurateup Aneuk reading material. Data were analyzed using Peirce’s representamen–object–interpretant framework and the Miles and Huberman model. The findings show that the material enables students to progress from literal comprehension toward cultural, religious, and critical-reflective interpretation. Cultural signs related to Peudodaidi, parental affection, prayer, and religious expressions were interpreted as representations of faith, remembrance of Allah, parental responsibility, and religious character. The study concludes that Peurateup Aneuk functions as a cultural, semiotic, and cognitive resource that connects Arabic reading competence with Acehnese cultural literacy and tawhid-oriented reflection. The integration of this local tradition into Mahārah al-Qirāʾah therefore offers a culturally contextualized approach to Arabic language learning while strengthening students’ religious and cultural understanding.
