Traditional Children's Songs as an Ethnopedagogical Medium in Education: A Scoping Review and Implications for Kakawihan Barudak
Abstract
Traditional children's songs, a form of folk music, bring together language, music, movement, play, social interaction, and cultural knowledge. Yet research on their use as ethnopedagogical resources is scattered across disciplines and study designs. This scoping review mapped how these songs are used, the pedagogical mechanisms and educational outcomes reported, the methodological profile of the literature, and the implications of local and international research for revitalizing kakawihan barudak. The review followed JBI guidance and was reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR. Searches of Scopus and Google Scholar yielded 2,022 records. After deduplication, screening, supplementary searching, and full-text assessment, 27 studies were included in the main evidence synthesis. Data were summarized descriptively and synthesized narratively by theme. Nineteen studies were conducted in Indonesia and eight in international settings. Songs were used for curriculum and music-language learning (n = 8), character education (n = 7), language and heritage preservation (n = 5), movement, play, and dance (n = 4), parenting (n = 2), and digital learning (n = 1). The most common mechanisms were social interaction (n = 26), lyrics and values (n = 25), movement or play (n = 22), and melody and rhythm (n = 16). Dominant themes included character and values, curriculum integration, cultural identity, language, creativity, and social-emotional development. However, 15 studies did not directly measure participant outcomes, and only two were classified as outcome/intervention studies. The findings suggest that kakawihan can serve as a multimodal ethnopedagogical resource, but meaningful revitalization will require authentic documentation, age-appropriate repertoire sequencing, stronger family-community-school links, culturally grounded digital development, and more robust evaluation of educational outcomes.
