The Transformation of Tourism Education in Indonesia in the Context of Globalization: A Historical Education Study
Abstract
The transformation of tourism education in Indonesia within the context of globalization is examined through the perspective of the history of education. This study aims to analyze historically the changes in orientation, institutional structure, and curriculum of tourism education as responses to global dynamics. The research employs the historical method, consisting of heuristic stages through the examination of archives and policy documents on education and tourism, source criticism to assess the validity and reliability of data, interpretation to understand the relationship between tourism education and globalization, and historiography as the stage of constructing historical narratives. The findings indicate that globalization has driven tourism education in Indonesia to shift from locally oriented vocational education toward professional education based on competencies and international standards. This transformation is reflected in curriculum changes emphasizing certification, foreign language proficiency, and global tourism management, as well as in the institutional restructuring of tourism education aligned with national economic development policies. Furthermore, the study reveals that this transformation has not occurred linearly but has been shaped by the interplay of state policies, tourism industry interests, and local socio-cultural contexts. This study underscores tourism education as a significant arena for negotiating global and national interests within the history of education in Indonesia.
