Abstract

ABSTRACT

Qualitative research has been conducted dealing with a variety of alternative conception of dynamic force that occurred in students of physics teacher candidates. A large number of students are challenged with two questions about force diagram on free-body. One question is about the concept of the forces that exert on the beam located freely on rough surface floor and the other question is about any forces that exert on objects but it remains stay. Most of the written test answers indicate alternative conception of physics student, so we need further interview. The respondents were interviewed based on samples that have the most abundant data information on conception patterns of the dominant alternative conception (opportunistic sampling). It was concluded: (1) there are alternative conceptions that occurred at various levels of the semester, with a better quality of thinking at the higher semester, and there are alternative conceptions that occurred at all levels of the semester, but with the same characteristics, (2) some factors that caused alternative conceptions are intuition, fragmented student conceptions, the factor of learning, conceptually appreciation, and specific theoretically frameworks.
