Abstract

ABSTRACT

Understanding students’ mental model is essential for an educator. This study elucidates elementary school students’ mental model about static electricity concept based on their geographical location. Sampel was 21 elementary school students from Kendari City and 17 students from Konawe Regency Southeast Sulawesi. Students’ ideas about static electricity phenomenon were collected by asking them to wrote their ideas about static electricity phenomenon in a piece of paper. Those ideas were classified according to its mental model type. Results suggested that students living in the city have relatively more conceptual thinking framework whereas students living in the regency area used a more intuitive thinking framework. Nevertheless, students from the city or from the regency area generally used everyday life analogy in interpreting static electricity concept.
